Did you know that the food waste that you put into trash that goes to landfills is a major contributor to Climate Change? The organic waste in landfills decomposes and emits methane which is a far more potent greenhouse gas than CO2. It is also not good practice to put food waste down your “garbage” disposal as it overloads our local wastewater treatment facilities and, yes, generates methane. In March of 2022, Washington state became the ninth state to enact a law banning food and other organic waste from landfills. No later than January 1, 2027 all communities have to provide for separate collection of organic materials.
