5.1 Panorama News

5.1.1 Background and content

Each monthly issue of the Panorama News devotes one page to the Green Team.  Generally, the page announces the upcoming Green Team program occurring in that month and also any field trip scheduled for that month, and sometimes the following month.

The above information usually takes up about 50-60% of the space on the page, so the remaining space can include such things as:

  • A recycling tip or suggestion
  • A natural history fact
  • A report (with a photo) of a recent program or field trip
  • Some caution related to environmental practices such as “be careful to avoid the exhaust from gas-powered leaf blowers.”
  • One or more photos.
  • A short article with a link to a longer version of the article on the Green Team website.

There are three months when the Green Team does not put on programs; in that case there are other valuable ways to fill the space:

July and August: in recent years, we have been listing/describing the weekly summer lectures at the Billy Frank Jr. National Wildlife Refuge.

December: we have offered suggestions for a “greener” holiday season, reducing consumption generally, and reducing paper/plastic waste.

5.1.2 Submission guidelines and deadlines

The editorial staff for the Panorama News asks us to limit our word count to 500 words total, including all headers.  If we have fewer than 425 words, we can submit a photo.  **** check on these numbers ***

Text and photos must be sent as separate documents in a single email message.

The deadline for each issue is 3 p.m. on the 10th day of the month previous to the issue of the News.  So, for example, material for the May issue of the News must be submitted no later than 3 p.m. April 10.  If the 10th day of the month falls on a weekend (Saturday or Sunday), then the deadline is the previous Friday leading up to that weekend.

All material (text and photos) for the Green Team page and the Calendar and Activites entries should be emailed to PanoramaNews@panorama.org

5.1.3 Calendar and Activities & Events entry

If we are putting on programs and field trips, we also need to submit information for the Calendar and “Activities and Events” pages that are on the last pages of each issue of the Panorama News.  See the Green Team News Template for the format for submission of this information.  Click to download Green Team News Template in docx format.

5.1.4 Green Team news page examples

Examples of the Green Team page can be found in any recent Panorama News. The Table of Contents will list Green Team with the page number.
